For most women, it is a huge burden to get rid of body hair every two days, every week, or every month.
The majority is constantly looking for more effective ways to get rid of unwanted hair;
the less they have to think about it, the better.

Shaving has become archaic and waxing is too painful.
How about trying something to get rid of unwanted facial and body hair long-term?
This is what electrolysis and laser hair removal procedures do; by destroying the hair follicle, the growth of the hair is delayed.

In general, electrolysis hair removal is more precise than the laser hair removal.
However, both procedures have their advantages and disadvantages, so read below to make an informed decision
in regards to which hair removal method suits you best:


ELECTROLYSIS

Advantages
Electrolysis is an FDA-approved procedure performed to remove unwanted facial and body hair.
It has proven to be very convenient and effective in the three types of current that can be applied to the skin:
galvanic electrolysis, thermolysis, and a mix of both.

Its main advantages are:

- Electrolysis is a precise and targeted procedure.

- Electrolysis hair removal requires little or no downtime.

- Electrolysis hair removal helps produce a natural and smooth look.

- Electrolysis hair removal can tackle hair in any area of the body.


Disadvantages
Electrolysis hair removal just slows down the hair growth, thus, eventually, you may have to wax or shave the area again,
but less frequently for sure.

Its main disadvantages are:

- Electrolysis may be painful and slow, demanding that you visit the doctor regularly to carry on with the treatment.

- Electrolysis hair removal is expensive. Each session costs around $30 to $50, and you may need about 30 sessions to
really destroy the hair follicle.

- The results may be uneven, because electrolysis only hits the hairs that are in the middle of their growth cycle,
thus, you may see new hair coming out later.

- Electrolysis hair removal is not recommended for sensitive skin because it uses heat energy to destroy the follicle, thus,
it can damage tissues and cells on delicate skin.


LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Advantages
You will see results within the first two sessions of a laser hair removal procedure,
which means the cost goes down considerably.

Its main advantages are:

-Laser hair removal is not painful.

- Laser hair removal produces insignificant side effects, for example, redness and minor swelling.

- Laser hair removal is a very convenient procedure because each session lasts only about an hour

- Laser hair removal works for large body areas like the back, chest, legs and arms.

- Laser hair removal is very effective to remove patches of dark or coarse hair.


Disadvantages
Laser hair removal is not as precise as electrolysis.

- If laser hair removal is not applied by a professional, it can burn the skin because of the power of the laser.

- Laser hair removal may damage, burn or scar, the skin on your face.

The relief from the age-old hair removal methods like plucking, waxing, shaving is temporary. 
In the new hair removal method of electrolysis, each hair is treated separately.

How Laser Hair Removal works

A laser emits an invisible beam that penetrates the skin around the hair. Because of the dark pigments in the hair,
the energy from the laser is absorbed into the hair. The energy from the 
laser converts into heat, damaging the function of the hair, and the ability for the follicle to grow hair.

Why Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a fast and effective way to remove hair. It can treat large areas rapidly. 
Over a period of time all the targeted hair becomes deteriorated and the hair ceases to grow.

How often do I have to get the laser hair removal procedure done?

An (indicative) number of sessions

Intervals in between each session

Face: 6 sessions, 2-3 months

Upper lip: 6 sessions, 1,5-2,5 months

Chin: 5 sessions, 2 months

Forearm: 4 sessions, 2-3 months

Back: 4 sessions, 2-4 months

Chest: 4 sessions, 2-3 months

Underarm: 6 sessions, 2-3 months

Bikini: 4 sessions, 2-2,5 months

Thighs: 4 sessions, 2-4 months

Legs: 4 sessions, 2-3 months

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal, while safe when done correctly can cause the skin to burn. The energy from 
the laser is targeted by color. Darker colors attract more of the laser’s energy.
This becomes a problem for people who’s skin color is close to the color of their hair. The laser energy is no longer
just absorbed into the hair follicle, but is absorbed into the skin as well, which can cause
burning, scarring and damage.

The larger the difference or contrast between the color and your skin, the better a candidate you 
are for laser hair removal.

What areas can I treat with Laser Hair Removal?

Any area on the body is treatable, except for close to the eye area. The most common area are 
the face, upper lip, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, chest, abdomen, bikini area, and legs.

The difference between Laser hair removal and pulsed light treatment

Pulsed light treatment is not actually a form of laser. Using intense high energy light it produces 
the same effect as laser hair removal. These devices are harder to adjust to each patient’s skin 
and hair type and therefore require larger expertise to use than laser hair removal.

Adverse reactions to laser hair removal

The worst case scenario with laser hair removal is damage to the surrounding skin. 
This can result in pigment changes in the skin. Skin may become lighter or darker. Change in 
skin color is usually temporary and fades after a few months. The darker one’s skin is the 
more susceptible they are to adverse reactions when undergoing laser hair removal.

In order to decide if you want to use laser hair removal, you can check online for research 
and then you would need a doctor consultation.

Why should you use a laser to remove hair?

Lasers can target pigmented hair while leaving the skin around the laser treatment unaffected. 
With each pulse of the laser, you can treat many hairs. Each pulse only takes a fraction of a 
second. Compare this with electrolysis and you will see that laser hair removal is much more 
precise and faster.

Does laser hair removal really work?

The results are quite predictable. 90% of patients usually have permanent hair loss. 
10% percent of patients, no matter what you do, hair loss just does not happen. 
Usually after each session, most of the treated hairs by the laser fallout. 
After about six weeks the hair follicles that have survived gradually start growing back. 
But on the average with each session, approximately one third of the hairs’ treated 
never return back and, therefore, are permanently removed.

The remaining hairs tend to be lighter in color and also smaller in size. 
Patients typically, on the average, are satisfied with three to five treatments separated by two 
months apart. Patients that have darker colored skin may need more sessions as their skin 
may  require lower energy levels in order to be a safe treatment.

Will laser hair removal work for me individually?

A consultation is required to determine if you really are a suitable candidate for a laser hair 
removal procedure. Dark, coarse hairs on any part of the body usually respond well. 
As a rule, very fine or  very lightly colored hair whether it's white, gray, or red, do not respond
well to treatment.

Patients with dark complexions really need to be treated cautiously because the 
dark skin interferes with the laser light even before reaching the hair. 
With the latest technology available, there is some flexibility to treat a 
wide variety of patients effectively and safely.

What should I do before laser hair removal treatments?

Prior to treatments some protection from the sun is recommended. Usually for at least a month 
in advance. Tan skin increases the pigmentation and this can compete with the laser light. 
This can result in less effective sessions with a higher chance of side effects. 
The hairs in the areas that you want treated must be short but visible. 
It is very important not to pluck or wax the hair for a month prior to the treatments.

How long does each laser hair removal session usually last?

The treatment is relatively quick but also depends on the amount of hair to be treated. The laser 
can treat the hairs about the size of a quarter every second. A small area like the upper lip can be treated
in less than a minutes, while large areas like the back or the legs may need up to an hour.

Will laser hair removal hurt?

An anesthetic cream is usually recommended to numb the skin before treatments. 
This you will need to speak with the doctor and he can discuss with you which cream would be effective.
The procedure is usually tolerated well with a mild sensation of heat tingling or stinging.

What should I expect after the laser hair removal treatment?

The laser hair treatment area looks and feels much like a sunburn that usually last one to 
two days. You can use a cool compress and moisturizers. The area treated pretty much is 
usually pain-free the day after. Makeup can usually be used after the treatment unless there are blisters.
Blisters, though not common, are more likely to happen in patients with darker skin. 
The lasered hair falls out over a month period and should not frighten you. Also, you should use 
sun protection for a month afterwards so it won’t change the pigment in your skin. 
Changes that sometimes may occur, which are permanent undesirable side effects, 
are scarring or skin color changes, though rare.

Again you really need to speak with a doctor before you even consider having laser hair removal. 
This is only general information and not to be taken as the only answers to these questions.
